BISSAP – Hibiscus/Sorrel Drink

In today’s episode, I’m sharing with you how I make Bissap.

Bissap is a very yummy and refreshing drink that brings back childhood memories for me. Aside from being delicious, Bissap is rich in vitamin C and proteins. In fact, the benefits come from the dried sorrel flowers/hibiscus.

There are many ways to make Bissap, but this recipe is my go to and favorite way to make it. Likewise, you can checkout the video I made on my Youtube channel Afromomspices showing you all the steps on how to make Bissap. Hope you enjoy 😀

Let’s get started!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of dried sorrel flowers
  • 1/2 cup of mint leaves
  • 2.5 liters of water (84 oz)
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 packet of vanilla flavored sugar
  • 1 tbsp of strawberry flavored syrup

Step 1 – Prepping

Firstly, wash the dried sorrel and the mint leaves. Combine in a pot, cover with the water and bring to a boil.

Step 2 – Boiling

Secondly , boil for 15 minutes and remove the pot from the heat. Strain in a bowl and set aside. Let it cool down.

Step 3 – Flavoring

Once cooled down, add the sugar, the vanilla flavored sugar and the strawberry flavoring. Then, stir everything until well combined. Do a taste test and add more sugar if needed.

Notes: the amount of sugar used depends on your personal liking. I suggest you add the sugar gradually.

Step 4 – Serving

Finally, refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. You can also add ice before serving. Bon appétit!

Notes: pour some Bissap in some Ice Pop Makers and freeze for some refreshing frozen treats. Your kids will love it!
